Special Needs
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that are developmentally inappropriate and can impact functioning across home and school contexts (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; AIHW, 2019).
ADHD in the home environment
Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may face more challenges in the family environment, especially when the parents themselves have mental health issues. In some families, increased stress, irregular routines, and reduced emotional support can worsen the daily burden associated with caring for a child with ADHD.
-
Inconsistent or unpredictable daily routines
-
Reduced parental patience or emotional responsiveness
-
Increased exposure to family conflict or stress
-
Limited support with organisation and task completion
-
Misinterpretation of ADHD-related behaviours as deliberate misbehaviour
Children with ADHD may experience at home
Parents can have different reactions upon hearing about their child’s school problems. Some become defensive and angry. Their frustrations may spill over to the school and the teacher, quickly blaming them for their child’s difficulties. Other parents avoid the problem, perhaps hoping it will subside on its own or the teacher will find a solution. Still, others become discouraged and essentially give up trying to solve their child’s unending school problems.(Parker, H. C.,2005).

Influence
Experiences within the family can influence the academic performance of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The stress within the family and the lack of support in life can both affect students' emotional regulation abilities, attention, and performance in class.
Children may display the following behaviours at school:
-
Reclusive or lacking in emotions
-
It's very difficult to keep one's attention focused in class.
-
Failure to complete or submit the assignment on time
-
Unstable academic performance
-
Low participation in classroom activities
-
It's difficult to control one's emotions in a crowd.
-
During the process of interacting with peers, one may experience a strong sense of frustration.
-
Facing challenges in social signals and boundaries
-
Will be rejected by one's peers and society
-
Withdraw from group activities or cooperative games
